Everyone Are Encouraged to Join as the Additional Haim Sister.

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile fans have publicly coveted the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a close unit. Their music videos frequently show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Award Recognition

The group have called into home, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience required a new sound – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international fan base.

However Haim will consistently be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
